bioAffinity Technologies (NASDAQ: BIAF) has announced that the Japan Patent Office (JPO) has issued a notice of allowance (NOA) indicating its intention to grant a patent covering bioAffinity’s non-invasive lung cancer detection technology, CyPath Lung, expanding the company’s intellectual property coverage in Asia.
According to bioAffinity, the anticipated patent would become the company’s fifth Asian patent protecting its early lung cancer test and its first in Japan.
CyPath Lung uses sputum samples that patients can collect at home to identify cellular indicators associated with lung cancer. Its technology incorporates a fluorescent porphyrin that is preferentially absorbed by cancer and cancer-related cells. In a published clinical trial involving high-risk patients with indeterminate lung nodules smaller than 20 millimetres, CyPath Lung demonstrated 92% sensitivity, 87% specificity and 88% accuracy. The test also achieved a 99% negative predictive value, indicating its potential usefulness in helping physicians assess lung cancer risk.
