Non-profit Allegheny Health Network (AHN) has introduced the groundbreaking EksoNR, a wearable, full-body robotic exoskeleton that assists patients recovering from neurological injury or disease. The weight-bearing device, manufactured by Ekso Bionics (NASDAQ:EKSO), enables therapeutic exercises that are otherwise prohibitive for this patient population.

According to AHN, the EksoNR is the first FDA-cleared robotic exoskeleton for use with stroke, spinal cord injury, acquired brain injury, and multiple sclerosis. AHN is the first provider to offer the latest generation of EksoNR, and is one of only two health care providers in the region to offer this technology for outpatient use.

In a statement, Donald Whiting, MD, chair of the AHN Neuroscience Institute, said, “This technology represents a significant leap forward in our ability to provide advanced rehabilitation services for patients with neurological conditions.”

“The wearable robotic exoskeleton allows us to mobilize patients earlier in their recovery, leading to improved outcomes and enhanced quality of life,” Dr. Whiting said.

AHN reports that the acquisition of the EksoNR was made possible through donations of more than $200,000, including significant contributions from the West Penn Hospital Foundation and Miracles for Mary, a charitable organization that guides families through the challenges of life changing injury.

Gary Hoover, DO, physical medicine and rehabilitation at AHN, commented, “It’s crucial to manage expectations. While the exoskeleton may not enable all patients to walk independently, its therapeutic benefits are significant. For patients recovering from acute neurological events, it can accelerate and enhance progress. For those with chronic conditions, it offers the vital advantages of weight-bearing and standing activities in therapy, which is crucial to help manage complications of chronic neurologic injuries.”
