TearLab’s (NASDAQ:TEAR; TSX:TLB) osmolarity test for dry eye disease continues to make impressive inroads in gaining awareness and acceptance among U.S. eye doctors.

For example, an article entitled “Tear Osmolarity in the Diagnosis and Management of Dry Eye Disease,” which appeared in the May, 2011 issue of the prestigious American Journal of Ophthalmology, is making a strong impact.  It currently ranks as the second most frequently downloaded AJO article (on Science Direct) published from January to August this year.  A copy of the article can be accessed here.

In addition, Medscape’s Ophthalmology Best Evidence featured that that same piece as the top-rated article in June.  The Medscape publication highlights clinically-relevant journal articles that impact the practice of ophthalmology.  Featured citations are selected via a rigorous journal review process by physicians.

Importantly, TearLab’s osmolarity test was also included in the recently updated American Academy of Ophthalmology’s Preferred Practice Pattern guidelines for Dry Eye Syndrome. The new guidelines say, “Tear osmolarity has been shown to be a more sensitive method of diagnosing and grading the severity of dry eye compared to corneal and conjunctival staining, tear break-up time, Schirmer test, and meibomian gland grading.”
